Size Guide

The importance of measuring your head before buying a helmet

When it comes to safety, choosing a helmet that fits perfectly is crucial. An incorrect size is not only uncomfortable but can also reduce the helmet’s ability to protect effectively in case of an accident. Head sizes vary significantly from person to person, regardless of age, which is why taking the time to measure the head circumference before purchasing a helmet is essential.

A poorly fitting helmet can be too loose or too tight, leading to reduced comfort and safety. A loose helmet may slip off during a collision, while an overly tight helmet can cause discomfort, making it less likely to be worn properly. Therefore, it’s vital to find a helmet that fits well and meets safety standards.

How to accurately measure your or your child’s head

Fortunately, measuring head circumference is easy. Follow these steps to ensure you get the correct size:

  1. Position: Stand upright with your head in a neutral position – neither tilted too high nor bent too low. If measuring a child, it may be helpful to have them stand still in front of you.
  2. Find the right spot (see illustration): Identify the widest part of the head. This is typically around the forehead, just above the eyebrows, and around the back of the head where it is largest.
  3. Use a measuring tape: Use a flexible measuring tape (like those used for sewing) and place it horizontally around the head at the widest spot. Ensure the tape is neither too loose nor too tight. It should fit snugly but comfortably.
  4. Note the measurement: Once you have measured the circumference, write it down in centimeters. Most helmets indicate sizes based on head circumference, making it easy to match with the manufacturer’s size guide.

Choose the right helmet based on the measurement

Once you have your measurement, you can find a helmet that matches the specified size. Remember that many helmets come with adjustment mechanisms such as dial knobs and pads that can fine-tune the fit. These allow for extra customization, but the fundamental head measurement remains the most important step.

Benefits of a properly fitted helmet:

  1. Optimal Safety: A properly fitted helmet stays in place and provides the best protection during accidents.
  2. Comfort: A well-fitted helmet is more comfortable to wear for extended periods, which is especially important for children.
  3. Motivation to Wear: If the helmet fits well and looks correct, it is more likely to be worn regularly.

By taking a moment to measure the head and choose the right size, you ensure that the helmet provides both effective protection and comfort – an investment in both safety and peace of mind. For you and your child!
